"Introduction to Translation" Online Course

Introduction: Translation is arguably the highest form of cross-cultural communications. It is also an art, as long as one can master the craft -- that is, to convey an author's "voice" accurately, fluently and, most importantly, gracefully.
In the "Introduction to Translation" online course, the instructor, Dr Christine Yunn-Yu Sun, will utilise her 25 years of experience as a professional translator to illustrate the importance and impact of translation as a profession.
Real examples and anecdotes from a wide range of translation projects are used to explain the many "tricks of the trade". Participants will have ample opportunity to try their hands on translating various short texts from English to a language of their choice. They will also discuss the challenges and triumphs in capturing and conveying an author's "voice", how to manage workload, contracts and payments, how to pursue professional development opportunities, and how to work with traditional publishers as well as independent published authors.
Course Structure & Learning Outcomes: "Introduction to Translation" is a self-paced course, consisting of six one-hour online sessions, using text-and-image-oriented web pages and YouTube videos, with written assignments and discussions via email.
Aspiring translators will learn the nature and significance of the profession, as well as the tricks of the trade, i.e. the art and craft of capturing and conveying an author's “voice” accurately, fluently and gracefully.
Emerging and established translators will learn of opportunities for professional development and for working with traditional publishers as well as independently published authors.
"Introduction to Independent Publishing" Online Course

Introduction: This is the era of authorpreneurship. In addition to working with traditional publishers, aspiring, emerging and established authors now have the choice of independent publishing and taking 100% control of the production, distribution and sales of their intellectual properties, in as many formats and markets as possible.
In the "Introduction to Independent Publishing" online course, the instructor, Dr Christine Yunn-Yu Sun, will utilise her 10 years of experiences as an independent publisher of digital and print books in English and Chinese languages to illustrate the importance of independent publishing being acknowledged as a mindset and operated as a business.
Participants in this course will gain in-depth knowledge and skills in publishing and distributing their literary works independently and globally, using IngramSpark's digital and print-on-demand services as an example. They will also discuss the challenges and triumphs in building author platforms, working with editors, illustrators, cover designers and even translators, creating multiple digital and print formats, and the tricks of trade in engaging local and global markets.
