First of the six-part Qin Kefang series, The Mystery of the Man in Black details 13-year-old Qin Kefang's journey to Southern Taiwan to spend the Chinese New Year with his grandparents. It is over there that he and his sister, while on an outing near a neighbor's place in the middle of the night, have discovered a figure that much behaves like a zombie.
Legend has it that in China's Hunan Province -- where this neighbor has come from -- those who died away from home can be brought back to their beloved land for burial. These zombies "sleep" during the day and "walk" during the night, and it is only with a series of complex and powerful rituals that one can command them.
Is it possible that this neighbor is bringing back home his wife, who passed away just weeks ago? Can the long-lost Chinese folk rituals be revived and put to use in modern-day Taiwan? See how Qin and his sister find the truth through diligent investigation using straight logic. |
