Gong Xuesheng is president of the Chinese Language Scientific Research Institute. He has long engaged in the research of languages and lexicography as well as the promotion of Chinese language overseas. His works include Chinese Language Reunification Scheme, Chinese Language Romanization Scheme, <>Gong's Phonetic Symbols, etc.
Both in China and overseas, Gong owns patents of a series of languages, dictionaries and other inventions, including Chinese Language Romanization Scheme, which was patented in America (Patent No: US 7398199). He has provided suggestions to the State Council of the People's Republic of China over a series of Chinese language unification schemes, including the standardization of various forms of the same characters, the gradual reduction of multi-tone characters, etc. The relevant recommendations were then transferred to the State Language Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Education's Language Application Management Department.
Gong was editor-in-chief of Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (Global Chinese Edition) in January 2008 and Contemporary Chinese Character Dictionary in June 2009, both of which were published by the Commercial Press International Co., Ltd. The Universal Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese, also edited by Gong, was published by World Book Publishing Company's Xi'an branch in August 2009.
